The night we were gold
Guest post with Jenny Drea
The tradition began a few festivals ago when myself and January packed for our first camping festival together. Our 'essentials' included several pairs of novelty sunglasses, lemons, limes and colourful umbrellas to decorate our drinks, a home-made tropical, flamingo themed flag for our campsite and most importantly - a huge tub of gold glitter. We unfortunately forgot wellies, raincoats or anything with any actual purpose for an Irish festival. However, we were not prepared to let this dampen our spirits!
We had one tune to play and one performance to perfect to start the weekend of fun - this was, of course, Spandau Ballet’s ‘You Are Gold!’ Our pre prepared bags of glitter were thrown as we badly sang the lyrics and brightened up the day for all.
For our next festival together, we thought it was necessary to both dress up as this epic song. And so we did. We sang. We laughed. We threw glitter. We had the best time ever!
We used gold face paint, hair spray, gems, foil and spray painted leaves to create our Gold looks. We wore Gold bombers for two quid that we bought on Thomas St and gold American Apparel disco pants. Inconvenient gold glitter gel nails and Gold flaked Smirnoff Vodka were also a feature of the night, but the most important accessory was of course, our sneaky bags of gold glitter.
